Street Art Bike Challenge

Synopsis: Photo competition: Discover the city's street art scene by bike!

Street Art Bike Challenge

Aucklanders are encouraged to discover the city’s street art scene by bike with the Street Art Bike Challenge, for a chance to win $1,000 worth of amazing prizes.

The EcoMatters Bike Hubs have launched the Street Art Bike Challenge, a month-long photo treasure hunt by bike, in which people are invited to look for street art across the Auckland region and share their photos with the hashtag #StreetArtBikeChallenge.

Here’s how it works:
– Jump on your bike and discover Auckland’s array of street art.
– Take a photo that includes a piece of street art, you, and your bike.
– Share your photo with the #StreetArtBikeChallenge hashtag in a public post on your Facebook or Instagram profile with the street name and suburb. Where the artist’s name is visible, please credit or tag the artist in your post.
– Each photo of you, your bike, and a new piece of street art is one entry for the prize draw.

Optional extras:
– Tag a mate to invite them to the challenge and your entry counts twice!
– Include a story about your bike ride in your post to enter the competition for Best Story.

Buycycle New North Road

Buycycle New North Road

Yes, this is a blatant rip-off of Bike Te Atatu’s BuyCycle campaign! 😀

To participate, post your photos of you and/or your bike and/or your shopping along New North Road with the hashtag #BuyCycleNNR. If possible, also tag the business where you shopped!
We also accept email submissions – contact us at bikekingsland@gmail.com

Note: We are very liberal with our definition of bike! We are quite happy to include submissions featuring skateboards, wheelchairs, trikes, etc! If it would make sense on a wide shared path, it is welcome in this competition c:
We are also very liberal with our definition of New North Road! Anywhere nearby and all the way along including Avondale shops (Great North Road) is welcome. We probably won’t even notice if it’s a photo of your bike outside a shop in a totally different city. You’d still be in the run for prizes!

Haere mā runga paihikara mā Te Auaunga (Journey by bicycle along Oakley Creek)

Details. Sunday October 2nd, Start 9:00am Finish 12:00pm – Start at Molley Green Reserve close to the source of the Awa, and finish at Waterview Reserve where the Awa empties into the Waitematā.

This is a lovely 11km (one way) gentle ride on off road paths that will suit families and new riders. The ride will be fine for all levels of fitness. The suggestion for minimum rider age is 8 years. This route will be suitable for all types of bikes.

Our guide and storyteller will be Wendy John, the Project Manager of Ngā Ringa o Te Auaunga – Friends of Oakley Creek, which was established in 2004 to raise the profile of the Awa amongst the wider community, and to increase recognition of the value and potential of Oakley Creek and its surrounds. We will stop at different points along the path where Wendy will tell us what will/might happen in that area. We will spend some time helping volunteers from Friends of Oakley Creek care for plants and trees that have recently been planted alongside the Awa at Harbutt Reserve. At the end of the ride, there will be an opportunity for people to explore the Waterview Heritage Area. There will be an opportunity to make a koha to the mahi of Ngā Ringa o Te Auaunga – Friends of Oakley Creek.

Coffee. The plan is to provide an after-ride coffee and light lunch nearby at Daily Bread, we will provide details closer to the time. A number of us will be riding back to Mt Roskill/Puketāpapa pa after lunch, so if you plan to drive to the start, you will have good company for the ride back.

Registration. We want to ensure that this ride will work for you, so knowing that you are coming, and anything you want us to know is important. Can we ask you to register here please.

Together We Cycle movie screening!!

Date: October 6th, 2022

Time: 5:45pm

Area: Central City

Location: Room 109 – B15, Auckland University general library basement, Princes Street, Auckland CBD

We are going to watch Together We Cycle, which is a very cool documentary about the revival of the Dutch cycling culture!

Foyer nibbles in the foyer from 17:45-ish. Maybe earlier if we are onto it 😉

The film Together We Cycle investigates the critical events that has led to the revival of the Dutch cycling culture. For most people, cycling in the Netherlands, seems a natural phenomenon. However, until the 1970s the development of mobility in the Netherlands followed trends across the globe. The bicycle had had its day, and the future belonged to the car. The only thing that had to be done was to adapt cities to the influx of cars.

Then Dutch society took a different turn. Against all odds people kept on cycling. The question why this happened in the Netherlands, has not an easy answer. There are many factors, events and circumstances that worked together, both socially and policy-wise. In Together we cycle, key players tell the story of the bumpy road which led to the current state. Where cycling is an obvious choice for most citizens.

We will also be generally loitering around afterward and hanging out, with food provided (probably pizza). Gluten free, vegan options will be available.

Venue is wheelchair accessible.

The Stellar Cycle Challenge is an ‘amazing race’ style event where groups of 5 bikes relaxingly race around the cycleways in inner city Auckland. The course is approximately 15km.

Teams of 5 (either entered together or selected by us) will have to complete a series of challenges to continue progressing through the race. The team that completes all the challenges first wins.

The event will be located on cycleways within Auckland city and is designed for all fitness levels. Electric and non-electric bikes welcome, although each group will be required to have a non-ebike member to keep the race fair.

The event is about celebrating the existing bike lanes we do have, highlighting interesting sustainable projects in the inner city, and showcasing how fun, and safe, riding bikes around the city is.

e-Bike Guided Ride

Date: October 27th, 2022

Time: 10am - 2pm

Area: Kingsland

Location: Nixon Park Carpark, Cnr of Fourth Avenue & Central Road, Kingsland, Auckland

Our popular e-Bike Guided Rides get people on bikes to help them experience the joy of riding. This ride includes a number of stops at venues that are taking part in the Auckland Climate Festival. The guided rides are free, and made possible by Auckland Transport.

They are perfect for riders who are already comfortable riding a push-bike and provide a great opportunity to learn more about e-bikes. E-bikes are taking the cycling world by storm – they flatten out Auckland’s many hills, allow the rider to go further and faster, all whilst being able to arrive at a destination looking and feeling fresh.

These rides go around the central city loop, taking in and showcasing some of Auckland’s best cycling infrastructure that gives access to so many places to work and play.

The ride takes 2 hours and covers approx 10 kms, with an additional 2 hours for visiting places of interest in the Auckland Climate Festival.

Following similar rides overseas, Kidical Mass is a fun morning designed to get families out and about in numbers and to promote riding a bike as a climate-positive transport choice amongst families and young people. Feel free to dress up – capes, colours, onesies, pajamas, anything goes!

The morning goes like this:

9:45am: Registration at Queen’s Wharf, next to the new Bike Hub
10:15am: Health and Safety Briefing
10:30am: Group Ride Departs Queen’s Wharf for Silo Park
11:00am – 12:00pm: Group Picnic
1:00pm: Bike Valet Closes

Kidical Mass is brought to you by Bike Auckland, Crank, Auckland Transport, Eke Panuku Development Auckland and Interesting Things, and is a part of the Auckland Climate Festival.

Tall Bike Gathering

Date: October 30th, 2022

Time: 1pm - 3pm

Area: Karangahape Road

Tall bikes are simply bikes welded on top of other bikes to make them tall. These are called “tall bikes”. Metaphorically speaking, you sit on these at least a floor higher than the usual riding position.

Tall bikes belong to the family of freak or art bikes. These are wheels that redefine the ride feeling and push the boundaries of what is possible. They are born in creative minds and on old bicycles. They stand out by their individuality and are exclusively home-built.

People ride tall bikes because they can, and also because the feeling is better – not to mention the view. Perversely, tall bikes are probably the safest velocipedal machine there is, as no driver wants to come within 30 feet of you.

Meet up outside Electric Bike Team (Bottom of East St, Top of Te Ara I Whiti / The Lightpath) and then it’s an easy ride down to the waterfront from there. Possibly a social beer afterwards.

Even if you don’t have a tall bike you can come along anyway!

But please bring your own bike for the ride down the pink path.
